How to Safely Introduce Children to Horses

Think of the first time that you ever met a horse.

Chances are that you were a kid and you were looking up at this MASSIVE beast. Maybe you were thrilled, maybe you were terrified, but one thing is for sure: it was likely a memorable experience! Maybe your first experience was a pony ride at the carnival where the interaction lasted about 5 minutes before the next child had their turn. Imagine if, during this first experience, the horse was at YOUR level. Imagine that you had the time to foster a relationship with this horse, learn their name, and be integrated into their daily care. Our philosophy at Beloved Miniature Horses is to foster the relationship between child (or anyone) and build mutual respect between our horses and guests. In order to do this, there are some ground rules to understand before you step into the ring

Safety First

The first step is an easy one: safety first! Are you wearing closed toe shoes? Do you have your helmet? Check and check! While these physical aspects are safety are important, it is also important that you enter the ring in the right frame of mind. Are you calm? Are you receptive to instructions? Are you taking in your surroundings? This is an exciting experience, especially for kids, but it is so very important that horses are approached respectfully and calmly.

Enjoy a Play Date

Think of how to make friends in real life? Do you charge at a stranger and demand a piggy back ride? Likely not (awkward…). Enjoy each others company! Like people, horses have a wide variety of preferences and personalities. Learn the name of the horse, give them a treat, pat their head and strike up a conversation. Go ahead and tell them your favourite joke! At Beloved Miniature horses, guests are encouraged to become part of the care process and are taught about basic care like brushing and hoof care Not only does this help build a relationship, it is very helpful! Caring for a horse is a lot of work and understanding the work involved builds a level of respect needed for a happy and safe relationship.

Ready to Ride

You have approached your horse calmly, you have fed and brushed them, and you even told them your best horse joke (why the long face??). Your instructor has been watching and have decided that you are ready to ride! How exciting! The MOST important thing at this point is to listen very carefully to your instructor and follow their lead. Our staff at Beloved Miniature horses are not only highly trained, we know our horses best and are sure to match your child (or even you!) with a horse that complements your own personality and needs. We are like horse matchmakers!

Talk About Your Visit in Advance

Parents often ask how they can best prepare their child for a fun and safe visit with our horses. The most effective way is to simply talk to them about it! Another great way is to visit our Facebook Page and view the MANY pictures and videos that are sure to get the conversation started. Get your kiddo excited about the experience and stress that they already know how to behave when meeting a new horse, just like they are meeting a new friend for the very first time. This is a play date that they are sure to remember for years to come!
